And don't make the same mistake they did by overpromising on behalf of hydrocarbons. Some industry groups are still trumpeting "affordable, abundant" gas as the obvious choice for all uses. The E&P industry isn't sending that message - abundant perhaps, we certainly hope so, but affordability will depend on the pocketbook of the consumer in question. Gas prices nearly 3X last year aren't jumpstarting drilling yet. Utilities are saying the cost to install large scale gas fired generation is now 2-3X what it was pre-COVID. Those bills will be hitting this winter. Somehow we have to be able to maximize the benefit from all the renewables that have already been installed to keep the lights on. The oilfield itself is rapidly electrifying. Are there lessons learned that can be passed along to consumers in non urban areas? And are we learning the lessons that electrification is affecting oil demand at the margins? The transition is here, just moving way more slowly than supporters were hoping for.
